Don't rely on color alone: both bear species range from black to blonde. Grizzly bears have a distinctive shoulder hump between their front shoulders, creating their highest point when viewed from the side. Black bears lack this hump and instead have their highest point at the middle back or rump.
Examine the face profile and ears for clear differences. Grizzly bears have a concave "dish-shaped" face with smaller, rounded ears that appear closer together. Black bears have a straight facial profile from forehead to nose with larger, more pointed ears that stand tall.
Geographic location provides crucial context for identification. In the lower 48 states, grizzlies only exist in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and northern Washington, primarily around Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Black bears have a much wider range across most of North America, including Alaska, Canada, and 40+ U.S. states. If you're outside grizzly territory, any bear you see is likely a black bear, regardless of color.
Claw differences are significant but dangerous to observe up close. Grizzly bears have longer (3-4 inch), lighter-colored, gently curved claws perfect for digging. Black bears have shorter (1-2 inch), darker, more curved claws designed for tree climbing.
